Commontide
Ecumenical Commemoration
Abbess & Monastic
February 10 · d. 543
Scholastica was the sister of Benedict of Nursia, dedicated to God from her infancy, and she is known from two chapters of a single sixth-century book. Once a year she came to meet her brother outside his monastery. At their last meeting she asked him to stay the night, he refused on the rule, and she prayed; a storm broke that kept him until morning. Three days later Benedict saw her soul rise as a dove, and had her laid in the grave he had prepared for himself. Her feast is 10 February.
Scholastica was Benedict's sister, and she was given to God when she was still too small to remember it. She kept that promise her whole life. Once every year she would travel to see her brother, who was abbot of a great house of monks and bound by his own rule, and he would come out to meet her at a place belonging to the abbey, not far from the gate, because she could not go in.
Think what a small allowance that is. One day a year, and a doorway you may never cross.
On the last of those visits they spent the whole day, as Gregory tells it, in the praises of God and spiritual talk, and when evening came they ate supper together and kept talking. Darkness came on. Scholastica asked her brother to stay, just this once, so that they could spend the night speaking of the joys of heaven. Benedict would not. He was the abbot; his rule said he might not lodge a night outside his abbey, and he had kept that rule for years. The sky, Gregory is careful to say, was perfectly clear. There was not a cloud in it.
So Scholastica folded her hands on the table, laid her head down on them, and prayed. Her tears fell on the table, and Gregory says she drew the clear air to a watery sky. In the same instant that she lifted her head, the rain came down: thunder, lightning, and such a downpour that Benedict and his monks could not put their heads out of the door.
Her brother was not pleased. "God forgive you," he said, "what have you done?" And Scholastica answered him: "I desired you to stay, and you would not hear me, I have desired our good Lord, and he hath vouchsafed to grant my petition."
He stayed. They talked all night about heaven, and comforted one another, and in the morning she went back to her nuns and he went back to his abbey.
Three days later Benedict was standing in his cell and looked up, and he saw his sister's soul leave her body and go up into heaven in the likeness of a dove. He did not weep first. He sang. He gave thanks to God for her glory, told his monks that she had died, and sent them to bring her body back, because he wanted her buried in the grave he had already dug for himself. And so it was. Gregory says that as their souls were always one in God while they lived, so their bodies continued together after their death.
Gregory, who is telling us all this, adds one line of his own about that night in the rain. God is love, he says, and therefore of right she did more which loved more. It is worth remembering the next time somebody tells you that the rules are the whole of it. The night Scholastica asked for, she got; and the grave she was carried to had been waiting for her all along.
You know the argument she was having, because you have had it. Someone you love asks for more time than the schedule allows, and you are not being cruel when you say no; you are being responsible, and the rule you are keeping is a good one. Benedict was right about his rule. He went home in the morning and kept it for the rest of his life. But that night the answer came down in the rain, and Gregory's verdict on it is not that the rule was wrong but that she loved more, and so she could do more. Notice that she did not argue with her brother. She stopped talking to him and started talking to God, and the request she made was not for a favour but for one more night of speaking about heaven with someone she would not see again. When you next find yourself refused, is the thing you would ask God for as worth the asking as that?
Everything known about Scholastica as a person comes from two chapters of one book: Gregory the Great's Dialogues, Book II, chapters 33 and 34, written around 593 or 594, roughly fifty years after her death. There is no letter, no epitaph, no contemporary chronicle, nothing from her own community. Gregory names his informants for the whole of Book II in its prologue, four monks of Benedict's circle (Constantinus, Valentinianus, Simplicius and Honoratus), but he does not claim any of them as a witness to the Scholastica episode in particular. The English quoted on this page is Edmund Gardner's 1911 re-edition of an anonymous English translation of 1608 signed only "P.W."; the standard modern critical text is the Sources Chrétiennes edition of Adalbert de Vogüé and Paul Antin.
What Gregory gives is spare. She is Benedict's sister; she was dedicated to God from her infancy; she visited once a year; there was a storm; there was a dove; they share a grave. He gives her no office, no rule, no convent name, no distance from the monastery, and no twin. Later tradition supplies all of those. The abbess's crozier and the convent name Plombariola are later; the Church of England's calendar prints "Scholastica, sister of Benedict, Abbess of Plombariola, c.543" to this day, which is a fair measure of how thoroughly the tradition settled. The familiar "five miles" comes from Alban Butler, not from Gregory. The twin tradition is ninth century, about three hundred years after her death. Her parents are unnamed in Gregory and unnamed in the standard Catholic Encyclopedia article on Benedict; the names and the descent from the senatorial Anicii that circulate online come from modern compilations and editorial apparatus.
The date is likewise later than the text. Gregory gives none. The 10 February 543 that this page carries is supplied by Gardner's own footnote to the 1911 edition, which also puts Benedict's death a month after hers, on 21 March 543. The whole chronology hangs on one external synchronism, King Totila's visit to Monte Cassino, which the Catholic Encyclopedia dates to 543 and Gardner's own note dates to probably 542. A traditional 547 for Benedict's death is also in circulation, and at least one modern scholarly position puts it as late as about 560. Say "traditionally dated to 543" and leave it there.
One modern departure should be named and not overstated. In 1987 Francis Clark argued that the Dialogues are a later seventh-century compilation rather than Gregory's own work; Paul Meyvaert answered him at length in 1988, and Marilyn Dunn has argued separately for a 670s origin. The mainstream position remains Gregorian authorship.
What is contested, then, is nearly everything institutional, and what is secure is the shape of the thing itself: a woman vowed from infancy, a yearly meeting, a night of rain, and a grave shared with her brother, told within a lifetime of the men who knew him.
Her feast is 10 February in the Roman Catholic, Church of England and Episcopal calendars, and she is kept by Orthodox Christians as a saint of the undivided Western church. The Premonstratensians commemorate her on 9 February, and the diocese of Aachen keeps 6 February for a translation of her relics. There is no canonization paper trail and there was never going to be one: she belongs to the age before the papal process existed, and her recognition rests on unbroken liturgical observance.
The Church has always prayed her story back in her own words. Her retort to Benedict was lifted almost intact into a proper antiphon for her Office, Ecce te rogavi audire me, which survives in the eleventh-century antiphoner of Toledo Cathedral, sung at Lauds; the sister, not the narrator, gets the last word on the page. The older Roman collect for 10 February was built instead on Gregory's other image, asking that those who keep her feast might live in the innocence her soul showed when it pierced heaven in the likeness of a dove.
Her relics travelled, and are claimed twice over. A ninth-century Fleury tradition holds that after the Lombards ruined Monte Cassino her body was carried into Francia and came to Le Mans under Bishop Berecharius (655 to 670); a portion went to Juvigny-les-Dames with the Empress Richilda in 874, and the Le Mans shrine burned on 3 September 1134, leaving only a few calcined bones. Monte Cassino has always maintained that neither body ever left, and that she and Benedict lie together beneath its high altar. Le Mans kept her anyway: she was reckoned the town's patron by the sixteenth century, and was formally proclaimed patroness on 23 November 1876.
In art she is given the Benedictine habit, an abbot's crozier she never held, and the dove.
Gregory the Great, Dialogues, Book II, chapter 33, supplies the annual visit, the phrase "dedicated from her infancy to our Lord," Benedict's "God forgive you, what have you done?", Scholastica's reply, and Gregory's own verdict, "she did more which loved more" (in the Latin, plus potuit, quae amplius amavit). Book II, chapter 34 supplies the dove, Benedict's thanksgiving, and the shared grave. Both are quoted here in the 1911 edition by Edmund G. Gardner (London: Philip Lee Warner) of an anonymous English translation of 1608 signed "P.W.", public domain and available at https://ccel.org/ccel/pearse/morefathers/files/gregory_02_dialogues_book2.htm (chapter 33 at anchor #C33, chapter 34 at #C34), with a parallel text at https://www.tertullian.org/fathers/gregory_02_dialogues_book2.htm. Gardner's footnotes 21, 41 and 43 carry the dating discussed above. The modern critical edition is Adalbert de Vogüé and Paul Antin, eds., Grégoire le Grand: Dialogues, Sources Chrétiennes 251, 260, 265 (Paris: Cerf, 1978 to 1980); the standard modern English is Odo John Zimmerman, Saint Gregory the Great: Dialogues, Fathers of the Church (Catholic University of America Press, 1959). The antiphon Ecce te rogavi audire me is Cantus ID 201480, at Lauds, in Toledo, Archivo y Biblioteca Capitulares, MS 44.2, folio 56v: https://cantusdatabase.org/chant/483164. The Le Mans relic history, the fire of 3 September 1134 and the 1876 proclamation are from the Catholic Encyclopedia article "Le Mans," https://www.catholicity.com/encyclopedia/l/le_mans.html; the statement that Gregory names no parents is from the same encyclopedia's "St. Benedict of Nursia," https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02467b.htm. O God, your blessed Son became poor for our sake, and chose the Cross over the kingdoms of this world: Deliver us from an inordinate love of worldly things, that we, inspired by the devotion of your servant Scholastica, may seek you with singleness of heart, behold your glory by faith, and attain to the riches of your everlasting kingdom, where we shall be united with our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
