Virgin & Martyr
January 21 · d. 304
also known as Agnes of Rome, Saint Agnes
Agnes was a girl killed at Rome for confessing Christ, and buried on the Via Nomentana. The earliest record of her, a Roman calendar of martyrs written out in 354, gives only a day and a road: 21 January, Agnes, on the Nomentana. Within a generation or two she was the most spoken-of virgin martyr in the Latin church. Ambrose, preaching on her feast in 377, says she was twelve years old and died by the sword.
Agnes was a girl of Rome, twelve years old when she died, or thirteen; the two bishops who first spoke of her, Ambrose and Augustine, gave different numbers and neither said where he got it. An imperial edict had made confessing Christ a capital matter, and a child who would not sacrifice could be brought before a magistrate like anyone else. She was brought.
She was also, by every account, wanted. Ambrose says men desired that she would come to them in marriage, and that the court tried threats first and then inducements, which is what courts do when they would rather not kill a child. Her answer, as Ambrose gives it, was that she was already spoken for: "It would be an injury to my spouse to look on any one as likely to please me. He who chose me first for Himself shall receive me."
The tyrant wished to burn her, says the epigram a later pope had cut over her grave, and she overcame an immense fear with her small strength. Fire was the threat held over her. It was not what killed her.
What killed her was a sword, and the strangest thing in the earliest telling is the man holding it. Ambrose, in the translation of H. de Romestin, describes what the onlookers saw: "Why are you delaying, executioner? Let this body perish which can be loved by eyes which I would not." She stood, she prayed, she bent down her neck. And then the executioner began to tremble, as though he himself had been condemned, his right hand shaking and his face going pale, afraid for someone else's life while the girl was not afraid for her own. Ambrose's summary of it has never been improved upon: one victim, a twofold martyrdom, of modesty and of religion. She remained a virgin and she obtained martyrdom.
Later tellings gave her much more. A century after her death a Spanish poet, Prudentius, wrote of her being exposed in a brothel and of a young man struck blind there and healed by her prayer; a later anonymous passion added her father, her suitors, the prefect and his son, and flames that parted from her body before the sword was used at last. The church has told those scenes for fifteen hundred years and painted them for most of that time, and they are why most people who know her name know it.
But the oldest thing anyone wrote about Agnes after her death is not a story at all. It is a line in a calendar: a day, and a road, and her name. Someone was already going out to that grave every January, within about fifty years of her burial, to keep the memory of a twelve-year-old. And when Damasus, bishop of Rome, finished his poem for her tomb, he ended it by asking her to pray for him.
You are unlikely to be asked what Agnes was asked, and that is exactly what makes her hard to look at rather than easy. She had no standing, no learning we know of, no years behind her in which to build a character equal to the moment; Ambrose's whole argument is that if a child could hold, no adult keeps an excuse. What she had was one settled prior loyalty, already decided before the magistrate ever spoke, so that the trial only revealed a choice rather than forcing one. Most of what is asked of you will be smaller than a sword and slower, a preference quietly abandoned, a promise let go of because holding it grew inconvenient. What have you already decided, before anyone asks, that you are not willing to trade?
The evidence for Agnes falls into two unequal parts, and the distance between them is the whole problem. There is a thin, early, largely undisputed skeleton, and there is a much richer narrative tradition, later, which supplies nearly everything popularly known.
The skeleton first. The Depositio Martyrum, the martyrs' calendar incorporated into the Chronography of 354 written out by the calligrapher Furius Dionysius Filocalus, carries the entry "XII kal. Feb. Agnetis in Nomentana": 21 January, Agnes, on the Via Nomentana. That is roughly fifty years after the traditional death date, and it is the entire fourth-century documentary record, a day and a burial place with no narrative at all. The Calendar of Carthage independently commemorates her on the same day in the early fifth century, though that claim needs a citation of its own; the source usually given for it does not in fact carry it.
The year is genuinely disputed, and Commontide's older summary line stated it too firmly. "Around 304, under Diocletian" is convention rather than the finding of any fourth-century witness. The Catholic Encyclopedia (J. P. Kirsch, 1907) reports that arguments from the Damasus inscription were already being brought forward in his own day for a third-century persecution instead, after Decius or under Valerian. No source consulted here adjudicates between them. The honest statement is that Agnes died in a Roman persecution on a 21 January. The birth year of about 291 that circulates in reference works is a modern back-calculation from an assumed age against an assumed year; no ancient source gives one.
Before 384, Pope Damasus I composed ten hexameters for her tomb, cut in marble by Filocalus. The stone survives substantially intact, one of only two of his martyr inscriptions to do so, found in 1728 reused face-down as a paving slab and now set in the descent to the narthex of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura. It reports her holy parents' account at second hand, has her leave her nurse's lap at the sound of the trumpet, and says the tyrant wished to burn her noble body. It does not say fire killed her; the frequently repeated "martyrdom of fire" is a modern paraphrase the Latin does not support.
The earliest connected literary account is Ambrose of Milan, De Virginibus Book I, written up from a sermon preached on Agnes's feast in about 377 at the request of his sister Marcellina, a consecrated virgin. It gives her age as twelve, her death by the sword, and the twofold martyrdom. It is an exhortation, not a record, and its silences are as shaped as its content: no brothel, no blinding, no persecutor named. Augustine, preaching on her feast in the early fifth century, gives her age as thirteen. The two are independent, which means they do not corroborate each other.
Nobody canonised Agnes; no such process existed. Her sainthood rests on immemorial veneration, and the evidence for that veneration is better than the evidence for her life. Constantina, daughter of Constantine, raised a large funerary basilica beside the catacomb grave in the middle of the fourth century; Honorius I rebuilt it between 625 and 638 in the form a pilgrim sees today, cut into the hillside so that the high altar stands directly over the original tomb. The body was never translated. It lies there still.
Her name is spoken in the Roman Canon, in the Nobis quoque peccatoribus, alongside Felicity, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Cecilia and Anastasia. A relic of her head, long kept in the papal collection at the Sancta Sanctorum, was given to Sant'Agnese in Agone in the first years of the twentieth century. A second feast on 28 January, commemorating a legend that she appeared at her tomb eight days after burial among a company of virgins with a lamb, was reduced to a commemoration in 1931 and afterwards dropped; it was never an alternative date for her death.
The oldest devotion is also the liveliest. Each year on her feast two lambs raised by the Trappists of Tre Fontane are brought to Rome and blessed, and their wool is woven into the pallia conferred on new metropolitan archbishops the following 29 June. A vestment worn by living bishops descends, by an unbroken material chain, from a fourth-century girl's grave, and from a pun on her name. In art she is a young girl with unbound flowing hair, a palm, often a sword, and from the Middle Ages onward the lamb. The oldest images do not have it: the fourth-century marble pluteus commissioned by Pope Liberius shows her simply standing with hands raised in prayer.
Ambrose of Milan, De Virginibus (Concerning Virgins), Book I, chapter 2, sections 8 and 9, is the source of "Not yet of fit age for punishment but already ripe for victory", of Agnes's answer to the court, of "Why are you delaying, executioner?", of the trembling executioner, and of the twofold martyrdom. Agnes is said of agna a lamb, for she was humble and debonair as a lamb, or of agnos in Greek, which is to say debonair and piteous, for she was debonair and merciful. Or Agnes of agnoscendo, for she knew the way of truth, and after this S. Austin says, truth is opposed against vanity, falseness, and doubleness, for these three things were taken from her for the truth that she had.
Of S. Agnes.
The blessed virgin S. Agnes was much wise, and well taught, as S. Ambrose witnesses, and wrote her passion. She was fair of visage, but much fairer in the christian faith, she was young of age, and aged in wit, for in the thirteenth year of her age she lost the death that the world gives, and found life in Jesu Christ, which when she came from school the son of the prefect of Rome, for the emperor, loved her, and when his father and mother knew it, they offered to give much riches with him if he might have her in marriage, and offered to S. Agnes precious gems and jewels, which she refused to take, whereof it happed that the young man was ardently esprised in the love of S. Agnes, and came again and took with him more precious and richer adornments, made with all manner of precious stones, and as well by his parents as by himself offered to S. Agnes rich gifts and possessions, and all the delights and deduits of the world, and all to the end to have her in marriage. But S. Agnes answered to him in this matter: Go from me you fardel of sin, nourishing of evils and morsel of death, and depart, and know you that I am prevented and am loved of another lover, which has given to me many better jewels, which has fianced me by his faith, and is much more noble of lineage than you are, and of estate. He has clad me with precious stones and with jewels of gold, he has set in my visage a sign that I receive none other espouse but him, and has showed me over-great treasures which he must give me if I abide with him. I will have none other spouse but him, I will seek none other, in no manner may I leave him, with him am I firm and fastened in love, which is more noble, more puissant and fairer than any other, whose love is much sweet and gracious, of whom the chamber is now for to receive me where the virgins sing merrily. I am now embraced of him of whom the mother is a virgin, and his father knew never woman, to whom the angels serve. The sun and the moon marvel them of his beauty, whose works never fail, whose riches never minish, by whose odour dead men rise again to life, by whose touching the sick men be comforted, whose love is chastity. To him I have given my faith, to him I have commanded my heart; when I love him then am I chaste, and when I touch him then am I pure and clean, and when I take him then am I a virgin, this is the love of my God. When the young man had heard all this he was despaired, as he that was taken in blind love, and was over sore tormented, in so much that he lay down sick in his bed for the great sorrow that he had. Then came the physicians and anon knew his malady, and said to his father that he languished of carnal love that he had to some woman. Then the father enquired and knew that it was this woman, and did do speak to S. Agnes for his son, and said to her how his son languished for her love. S. Agnes answered that in no wise she would break the faith of her first husband. Upon that the provost demanded who was her first husband, of whom she so much avaunted, and in his power so much trusted. Then one of her servants said she was christian, and that she was so enchanted that she said Jesu Christ was her espouse. And when the provost heard that she was christian the provost was much glad because to have power on her, for then the christian people were in the will of the lord, and if they would not reny their God and their belief all their goods should be forfeited. Wherefore then the provost made S. Agnes to come in justice and he examined her sweetly, and after cruelly by menaces. S. Agnes, well comforted, said to him: Do what you will, for my purpose shall you never change. And when she saw him now flattering and now terribly angry she scorned him. And the provost said to her, being all angry: One of two things you shall choose, either do sacrifice to our gods with the virgins of the goddess Vesta, or go to the bordel to be abandoned to all that thither come, to the great shame and blame of all your lineage. S. Agnes answered: If you knew who is my God you would not say to me such words, but for as much as I know the virtue of my God, I set nothing by your menaces, for I have his angel which is keeper of my body. Then the judge all araged made to take off her clothes, and all naked to be led to the bordel. And thus S. Agnes that refused to do sacrifice to the idols, was delivered naked to go to the bordel, but anon as she was unclothed God gave to her such grace that the hairs of her head became so long that they covered all her body to her feet, so that her body was not seen. And when S. Agnes entered into the bordel anon she found the angel of God ready for to defend her, and environed S. Agnes with a bright clearness in such wise that no man might see her ne come to her. Then made she of the bordel her oratory, and in making her prayers to God she saw tofore her a white vesture, and anon therewith she clad her and said: I thank you Jesu Christ which account me with your virgins and have sent me this vesture. All they that entered made honour and reverence to the great clearness that they saw about S. Agnes, and came out more devout and more clean than they entered. At last came the son of the provost with a great company for to accomplish his foul desires and lusts. And when he saw his fellows come out and issue all abashed, he mocked them and called them cowards. And then he, all araged, entered for to accomplish his evil will. And when he came to the clearness, he advanced him for to take the virgin, and anon the devil took him by the throat and strangled him that he fell down dead.
And when the provost heard these tidings of his son he ran weeping to the bordel, and began crying, to say to S. Agnes: O you cruel woman, why have you showed your enchantment on my son? and demanded of her how his son was dead, and by what cause. To whom S. Agnes answered: He took him into his power to whom he had abandoned his will. Why be not all they dead, said he, that entered here tofore him? For his fellows saw the miracle of the great clearness and were afeard and went their way unhurt, for they did honour to my God which has clad me with this vestment and has kept my body, but your villainous son, as soon as he entered into this house began to bray and cry, and when he would have laid hand upon me, anon the devil slew him as you see. If you may raise him, said he, it may well appear that you have not put him to death. And S. Agnes answered: How well that your creance is not worthy to impetre ne get that of our Lord, nevertheless because it is time that the virtue of God be showed, go you all out that I may make my prayer to God. And when she was on her prayers the angel came and raised him to life, and anon he went out and began to cry, with a loud voice, that the God of christian men was very God in heaven, and in earth, and in the sea, and that the idols were vain that they worshipped, which might not help them ne none other.
Then the bishops of the idols made a great discord among the people, so that all they cried: Take away this sorceress and witch that turned men's minds and aliens their wits. When the provost saw these marvels he would gladly have delivered S. Agnes because she had raised his son, but he doubted to be banished, and set in his place a lieutenant named Aspasius for to satisfy the people, and because he could not deliver her he departed sorrowfully. This Aspasius did do make a great fire among all the people and did do cast S. Agnes therein. Anon as this was done the flame departed in two parts, and burnt them that made the discords, and she abode all whole without feeling the fire. The people weened that she had done all by enchantment. Then made S. Agnes her orison to God thanking him that she was escaped from the peril to lose her virginity, and also from the burning of the flame. And when she had made her orison the fire lost all his heat, and quenched it. Aspasius, for the doubtance of the people, commanded to put a sword in her body, and so she was martyred. Anon came the christian men and the parents of S. Agnes and buried the body, but the heathen defended it, and cast so stones at them, that unnethe they escaped. She suffered martyrdom in the time of Constantine the great, which began to reign the year of our Lord three hundred and nine.
Among them that buried her body was one Emerentiana which had been fellow to S. Agnes, how be it she was not yet christened, but an holy virgin, she came also to the sepulchre of S. Agnes, which constantly reproved the gentiles, and of them she was stoned to death and slain. Anon there came an earthquaver, lightning and thunder, that many of the paynims perished, so that forthon the christian people might surely come to the sepulchre unhurt, and the body of Emerentiana was buried by the body of S. Agnes. It happed that when the friends of S. Agnes watched at her sepulchre on a night, they saw a great multitude of virgins clad in vestments of gold and silver, and a great light shone tofore them, and on the right side was a lamb more white than snow, and saw also S. Agnes among the virgins which said to her parents: Take heed and see that you bewail me no more as dead, but be you joyful with me, for with all these virgins Jesu Christ has given me most brightest habitation and dwelling, and am with him joined in heaven whom in earth I loved with I my thought. And this was the eighth day after her passion. And because of this vision holy church makes memory of her the eight days of the feast after, which is called Agnetis secundo.
Of her we read an example that in the church of S. Agnes was a priest which was named Paulus and always served in that church, and had right great temptation of his flesh, but because he doubted to anger our Lord he kept him from sin, and prayed to the pope that he would give him leave for to marry. The pope considered his simpleness, and for his bounty he gave him a ring in which was an emerald, and commanded that he should go to the image of S. Agnes which was in his church, and pray her that she would be his wife. This simple man did so, and the image put forth her finger and he set the ring thereon, and then she drew her finger again and kept the ring fast. And then anon all his temptation carnal was quenched and taken away from him, and yet as it is said the ring is on the finger of the image.
Constance the daughter of Constantine was smitten with a sore and foul leprosy. When she had heard of the vision of S. Agnes, at her tomb showed to her friends, she came to the sepulchre of S. Agnes, and when she was in her prayers she fell asleep, and she saw in her sleep, S. Agnes saying to her: Constance, work constantly, and if you will believe in Christ, you shall anon be delivered of your sickness, wherewith she awoke
and found herself perfectly whole, and anon she received baptism, and founded a church upon the body of the virgin and there abode in her virginity, and assembled there many virgins, because of her good example. In another place it is read that when the church of S. Agnes was void, the pope said to a priest that he would give to him a wife for to nourish and keep, and he meant to commit the church of S. Agnes to his cure. And he delivered to him a ring and bade him to wed the image, and the image put forth her finger and he set on it a ring and anon she closed the finger to her hand and kept the ring, and so he espoused her. Of this virgin says S. Ambrose in the book of virgins: This virgin, young men, old men and children praise, there is none more to be praised than that may be praised of all. S. Ambrose says in his preface that this blessed S. Agnes despised the delights of noblesse, and deserved heavenly dignity, she left the desires of man's fellowship, and she found the fellowship of the everlasting King. And she, receiving a precious death for the confession of Jesu Christ, is made conformable to him everlastingly, to reign in joy in heaven, to the which he bring us for whose glorious name and faith this glorious virgin S. Agnes suffered martyrdom of death.
Around 400, Prudentius wrote Peristephanon XIV in Spain, and the brothel episode and the blinded and restored youth enter the written record there. Beheading is already in Prudentius, at line 89. This matters for a claim often made in the wrong direction: what the later anonymous Passio Sanctae Agnetis, transmitted under Ambrose's name and now assigned to a Pseudo-Ambrose of the fifth or sixth century, adds is not the beheading but the two-stage ordeal, flames survived and only then the sword, along with the father, the suitors, the prefect and his son, and the foster sister Emerentiana. That text is the base of the Golden Legend and of nearly all medieval retelling, and it is the least evidentially reliable thing in the file. No early witness names any persecutor at all.
Two further cautions belong on the record. The name Agnes is borrowed from the Greek hagnē, "pure, chaste", and not from Latin agnus, "lamb"; the lamb is a pun the tradition adopted and then built upon. And the church of St Agnes in Rome is two churches: Sant'Agnese fuori le mura on the Via Nomentana, over the tomb, and Sant'Agnese in Agone on Piazza Navona, on the site tradition assigns to the brothel episode.

Jeremiah 15:15–21Psalm 34Revelation 7:9–17Luke 12:4–12
Almighty God, you gave your servant Agnes boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
