Ecumenical Commemoration
First Gentile Convert
February 4
also known as Cornelius, Centurion Cornelius, St. Cornelius
Cornelius was a Roman centurion stationed at Caesarea Maritima, a Gentile who prayed to the God of Israel and gave alms among its people without ever becoming a proselyte. Acts records that an angel sent him to fetch the apostle Peter, that the Holy Spirit fell on his household as Peter spoke, and that they were baptized. The church has kept him as the moment Gentile belonging was settled rather than merely allowed.
Cornelius was a centurion, an officer of the occupying army, posted at Caesarea by the sea, where Rome kept its governor and its garrison. Acts says he was a devout man who feared God with all his house, gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always. That is a strange sentence to write about a Roman soldier. He was not a Jew and he had not become one; he stood at the edge of a religion that was not his, close enough to pray and to give, not close enough to belong. There was a line, and he was on the wrong side of it, and everyone involved knew exactly where it ran.
At about three in the afternoon, at the hour of prayer, an angel of God came in to him and said his name. Cornelius looked at him and was afraid, and said, "What is it, Lord?" And the angel told him that his prayers and his alms had come up for a memorial before God, and that he should send men to Joppa for a man called Simon Peter, lodging with a tanner by the sea. Cornelius sent them that hour, on nothing but the name.
He could not have known what was happening at the other end. The next day, as his messengers came near the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray and saw a sheet let down from heaven with every kind of animal in it, clean and unclean together, and heard a voice telling him to kill and eat. Three times it came, and three times the word with it: what God has cleansed, do not call common. Peter was still turning it over when the knock came at the gate.
So Peter went to Caesarea, and he went inside. That is the thing to notice, because the whole story turns on a doorway. Peter said it out loud in the room: you know that it is unlawful for a man that is a Jew to keep company with one of another nation. And Cornelius, who had fallen at his feet and been pulled up again with the words "I myself also am a man," stood in a house full of his relatives and friends whom he had gathered to hear a stranger, and explained himself. Four days ago, he said, fasting, at the ninth hour, a man in bright clothing. He ended: "Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God."
Peter had not finished speaking when the Holy Spirit fell on all of them. The believers who had come with him, circumcised men, were astonished, because the gift had been poured out on Gentiles too. Peter asked the only question left: "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?" No one could. They were baptized.
The story does not end there, and it is not meant to. Peter went back to Jerusalem and was not congratulated but confronted: you went in to uncircumcised men, and ate with them. He told the whole thing from the beginning and finished by asking who he was, that he could withstand God. And the room went quiet, and then it gave way: "Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life." Years later, when the question came up again in council, Peter reached back to this house and this afternoon as the thing that had already decided it. A door that a Roman soldier knocked on was left open, and it has not been shut since.
You have prayed for things you could not name and given money you could have kept, and it is easy to wonder whether any of it registered. The angel's word to Cornelius is that it had: his prayers and his alms had come up for a memorial before God, before he knew the first thing about Christ, before he had any standing to claim. But notice that the answer he received was not reassurance. It was an errand, and an inconvenient one: send men sixty miles for a stranger whose message you have not heard. He sent them that hour. When the answer to your prayer turns out to be an instruction you do not yet understand, how quickly do you send?
Everything firsthand about Cornelius comes from one source: Acts 10:1 to 11:18, with Peter recalling the episode again at Acts 15:7 to 9. There is no second first-century witness, no inscription, no letter. Acts is a theologically purposeful narrative, arguing that the Spirit and not circumcision marks reception, and the shaping is visible; shaped is not the same as invented, but the reader should know that the visions in particular are reported by a writer present at neither.
No date can be fixed. Commentators propose somewhere between AD 38 and 41, reasoning from where Acts places the episode relative to Claudius and Herod Agrippa I, which assumes Acts orders events chronologically. That is inference from narrative sequence, not an external synchronism, and no year should be asserted.
Acts places Cornelius in "the cohort called Italian," usually identified with the Cohors II Italica civium Romanorum. The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1908 noted that an inscription proves that unit "stationed in Syria before A.D. 69." Its presence at Caesarea at the narrative date is not epigraphically attested at all, which is an absence of evidence over a vague window rather than a documented anachronism; surviving inscriptions are patchy, and some commentators read Luke's phrase as a loose description of soldiers of Italian origin rather than a formal unit name. W. M. Ramsay took up the question in an 1896 article in The Expositor, the standard reference behind the defense of Luke's detail.
The earliest surviving retrospective notice is Eusebius of Caesarea, writing around AD 300 to 325, who says that Cornelius of Caesarea in Palestine, with his whole house, "through a divine revelation and the agency of Peter, first received faith in Christ." Eusebius adds nothing Acts does not already say, and though Caesarea was his own see he does not call Cornelius its bishop.
That claim first appears in a nameable source around AD 375 to 380, in the Syrian church order known as the Apostolic Constitutions, which gives the Caesarean succession as Zacchaeus the publican first, then Cornelius, then Theophilus. This is the documentary root of the "second bishop of Caesarea" formula, and it is a late-fourth-century list, three centuries after the events, in a genre known for idealizing successions. A rival tradition, reported without adjudication by the Catholic Encyclopedia, makes him instead bishop of Scepsis in Mysia. That is the genuine unresolved conflict: not first or second, but Caesarea or Scepsis. The Theophilus of the succession list should not be identified with the dedicatee of Luke and Acts; the link is later legend and could not be confirmed.
Between the baptism in Acts 10 and a legend of unknown age, there is nothing at all. The Eastern narrative of Cornelius at Scepsis survives in Greek manuscripts of the tenth to eighteenth centuries, with Arabic, Ethiopic and Ethiopic-adjacent versions besides, and its date of composition is unknown to this research.
The East keeps Cornelius on 13 September and titles him hieromartyr, following a narrative in which Peter ordains him bishop and sends him by lot to the pagan city of Scepsis. There he confronts a ruler named Demetrius, prays inside the temple facing east, and the temple of Zeus and its idols come down in an earthquake; Demetrius's wife and son are found alive in the rubble, and the household is converted. He makes Eunomios a presbyter, evangelizes the city, and dies in old age. The same account that calls him martyr thus has him die peacefully, and no source found supplies any account of a violent death.
The Copts commemorate him on Hathor 23, narrating his conversion, his baptism by Peter and his ordination at Caesarea, and closing that "he departed in peace and received the crown of glory of the apostles." The traditional Roman Martyrology kept him on 2 February; the current Martyrologium Romanum gives 20 October; the Armenian Apostolic church keeps him on the Tuesday after the third Sunday of Advent; and the Episcopal Church keeps him on 4 February, which is our date.
What does not exist anywhere is a physical devotion. No relic, no tomb, no translation, no reliquary, no shrine, no pilgrimage site in any tradition, and no inscription or archaeological find naming him. The memory is entirely calendrical and narrative. One building carries his name and can be traced: the Chapel of St. Cornelius the Centurion on Governors Island in New York harbor, consecrated in 1847, rebuilt by the architect Charles C. Haight and dedicated on 19 October 1906, a soldier-saint chosen deliberately for a garrison chapel. It stands still.
The whole primary record is Acts 10:1 to 11:18, with Peter's recollection at 15:7 to 9; all quotations of it here follow the King James Version of 1611. The angel's greeting and Cornelius's "What is it, Lord?" are at Acts 10:3 to 4; his own account of the vision, the longest continuous speech attributed to him anywhere, is at Acts 10:30 to 33; Peter's "Can any man forbid water" is at 10:47, his statement about keeping company at 10:28, and the Jerusalem church's verdict at 11:18. The text is available at Wikisource, Bible (King James)/Acts of the Apostles, which is navigable by chapter only.
Eusebius of Caesarea, Ecclesiastical History II.3.3, is quoted in the Schaff translation printed at New Advent. The Caesarean succession is Apostolic Constitutions VII.46, in the same public-domain series at New Advent; Zacchaeus's ordination at Caesarea appears in the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions III.66, New Advent. John Chrysostom treats Cornelius at length in Homilies 22 and 23 on Acts, New Advent.
For the name, the freedman inference, the Syrian inscription and the two rival sees, see F. Bechtel, "Cornelius," in the Catholic Encyclopedia (1908), New Advent. W. M. Ramsay, "Cornelius and the Italic Cohort," The Expositor (1896), is the standard reference on the unit question.
The Scepsis narrative in accessible English, including "died in old age" and the ordination of Eunomios, is the life posted by the Orthodox Church in America. The Coptic commemoration and its closing line are at St-Takla.org, Hathor 23. The manuscript apparatus for the apocryphal Acts of Cornelius (BHG 371 and related), the Migne text at Patrologia Graeca 114, cols. 1293 to 1312, and the Burke and Witakowski translation in New Testament Apocrypha: More Noncanonical Scriptures, vol. 1 (Eerdmans, 2016), 337 to 361, are catalogued by NASSCAL e-Clavis. The English rendering of the traditional Roman Martyrology's 2 February entry followed here is that printed at christianiconography.info.
The February 4 commemoration, its collect and its biographical note are in Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2022. For the Governors Island chapel, its 1847 consecration and 1906 dedication, see Morgan Dix's own account at Project Canterbury.
And of S. Cyprian.
Cornelius is expounded, and is as much to say as, entending in prayer, and the gard, in abiding things outrageous. Or Cornelius is said of cornu, which is as much to say as strong, and of leos, that is people, that is the strength of people. Cyprian is said of cypress, that tincture, and ana, that is high. Then Cyprian is as much to say as tincture of height, for he had tincture of the grace, sovereign, and of virtues. Or Cyprian is said of cypress, that is to say heaviness or heritage, for he had heaviness of his sins and heritage of the heavenly joys.
Of S. Cornelius and S. Cyprian.
S. Cornelius succeeded to Fabian in the papacy, and was sent in exile of Decius Cæsar, and his clerks with him. And there received letters of comfort from Cyprian, bishop of Carthage. And at the last he was brought again from exile and presented to Decius. And when he saw him fast in the faith, he commanded that he should be beaten with plummets of lead, and that he should be brought to the temple of Mars for to do sacrifice, or else to have his head smitten off. And as he was led, a knight prayed him that he would return to his house because of Sallustia his wife, which had lain sick five years of the palsy. And she was healed by his prayers, and one and twenty knights with her believed in God, and were all brought to the temple of Mars by the commandment of Decius. And all they spit against it and were all martyred with Cornelius. And they suffered death about the year of our Lord two hundred and fifty-three. And Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, was present in the same city and was brought tofore Patronus the consul, and when he could not turn him in no wise from the faith of Christ, he sent him in exile. And from thence he was called again of Angliricus proconsul, which came after Patronus, and received martyrdom by smiting off his head. And when the sentence was given on him, he said: Graces and thankings be given to God. And when he came to the place of his martyrdom he commanded his servants to give to him that should smite off his head twenty-five pieces of gold. And then he took a linen cloth and bound his eyes with his own hands, and thus he received the crown of martyrdom, the year of our Lord two hundred and fifty-six.
Two things often said about Cornelius are not so. The line about prayers and alms coming up for a memorial before God is the angel's description of him, not his own words, and devotional writing misattributes it routinely. And the flat title "first Gentile convert" is complicated by the Ethiopian eunuch one chapter earlier; the stronger and better-supported claim is that with Cornelius, Gentile inclusion without circumcision became settled and defended doctrine, through Peter's account at Jerusalem and its use at the Council.
Cornelius wrote nothing. The apocryphal Acts of Cornelius has a rich manuscript tradition in Greek, Arabic and Ethiopic, but that tradition belongs to its own anonymous later author and is not his legacy.
Readings for a Commemoration
Micah 6:6–8Psalm 11 Corinthians 1:18–31John 3:16–21
Almighty God, you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses: Grant that we, encouraged by the good example of your servant Cornelius the Centurion, may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at last, with him, we attain to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
